Today is a special day. It is one of those moments in time when you get to stand back, take stock and look around. We are so delighted that Realex Payments is to become part of Global Payments.
It is a deal of significant strategic fit, in that together we will be able to achieve so much more. The combination of the Realex Payments team and online payments technology with the Global Payments team and international merchant acquiring capability will create a compelling proposition for the customers of both businesses. It is a remarkable fit. It is also a deal loaded with opportunity. The talent and expertise of both teams will bring ambition and delivery to the forefront of the payments industry.
The reach of Global Payments is extensive and truly international, extending opportunities to our large and small customers to sell globally. It will also afford our employees the opportunity to work in a truly global business. It’s also a superb opportunity for Dublin and Ireland to welcome yet another international business to the Silicon Docks.
The deal is also about the alignment of culture between two organisations that may be of different sizes but think the same way. Putting our people first; going the extra mile for our customers; keeping our solutions constant, reliable and secure; ensuring timely and consistent execution and building an organisation where customers become advocates and people love to excel. These are the mutual values that will create a new force in global ecommerce. This combination of strategic fit, opportunity and alignment makes this deal a real celebration of business.
For many on the Realex Payments journey, there will be some looking back to the early days, to the time when we couldn’t raise money, when family, friends and associates stepped in and provided us with the support we needed to get a basic service up and running (I guess that’s what people call “lean” today!). Asking for help was one of the best steps we took.
Today we acknowledge the help that was given to us, from the board and early stage BES investors, to the friends and people that worked for no wage, to the partners and suppliers who gave us their services, to the merchant acquiring banks who listened, the people that gave us free offices and above all to our friends and families who provided that constant foundation which meant that failure wasn’t an issue. We could never have followed our dreams nor achieved our goals without this help. The other outstanding memory of the early days was of course our first customer. What a day. Terrified that they might realise they were our only client, we set Directski.com live in March 2001. Since then we have added 12,500 customers in 30 countries across the world and now process over €28 billion a year. Thank you all.
Now our journey continues as part of the Global Payments business and we are more excited about the future than we were fifteen years ago.
When you make the decision to leave your job and set up a business, you realise very quickly that you can’t build a business on your own. You need a team, a team that shares the vision and one that is willing to ride the rollercoaster and cope with all the good and bad days. I have been incredibly lucky with the people that I have met who have joined the team. From the very early days, when Owen and I designed the service and John joined the board, we were set to build a business where our people would become our greatest building block on the road to today.
I want to thank and pay tribute to everyone who works here at Realex Payments. The board and management team have been an incredible support to me over the years and truly wonderful people with whom we have shared an amazing journey. Our Dublin and London teams are passionate, dedicated and driven people, who innately believe that customers should be advocates. Our people are remarkable and thank you all.
Now let’s start a new conversation, a new beginning together.
