Fraud Scoring & Pattern Checking

Selling in a situation where the customer is not present can be risky - a merchant is never sure if the buyer is an the real cardholder. To counter this, Realex Payments has developed a real time negative data and pattern checking scoring system that works at the point of sale. This allows a merchant to verify authenticity before committing to fulfilment.

It is good practice to risk-assess each transaction as it is being processed but associated overheads need to be kept to the minimum and ideally the process should be automated.

Two criteria govern protection in real time purchases.
  • A merchant must make sure of not getting stung a second time by checking all transactions against a blacklist of certain cards that have given problems in the past
  • A merchant must identify certain high-risk patterns in card usage. If this is the case the merchant may enter the card into a manual queue so that some investigative work may be completed prior to fulfillment.
