The Public Sector has been very progressive in making services to the citizen available through online means. With the rapidly increasing availability of broadband this sector has become a core focus for Realex Payments.

In 2002 Realex Payments was awarded the tender for processing online payments for all government and semi-state websites in Ireland. The firm is live with dozens of websites across the country, a number that increases by the month.

Realex Payments caters and processes for numerous county councils and government agencies, ranging from the collection of parking fees to online payments for refuse collection and water charges.

One of Realex Payments’ main clients within the public sector is the Motor Tax Online, provided by Ireland's local authorities and the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government. The online motor tax facility was rolled out in March 2004 allowing all motorists to pay through www.motortax.ie. This means the user can pay by Visa, Mastercard or Laser, and have the tax disc posted to their home address. The motor taxation department have incorporated Realex Payments real-time authorisation in addition to our RealMPI service to their site. The latter will give the department guaranteed payments for Visa and Mastercard and as result reduce its merchant service charge.

Another important organisation that process through Realex Payments is the Central Applications Office (CAO). In February each year thousands of students apply to study at third level institutions across Ireland. Realex Payments provide the CAO with an extensive service to allow students to efficiently and quickly process their applications.
